North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein issued a statement calling for the relevant authorities to investigate allegations that the current US postmaster Louis DeJoy engaged in illegal political contributions, WRAL reports.
Quotes from former employees of DeJoy in a Washington Post article point to a pattern of pressure: Employees would donate to GOP candidates and DeJoy would reimburse them through bonuses after the fact, allegedly. DeJoy’s status as a major Republican donor played a large role in his appointment to postmaster general.
“It is against the law to directly or indirectly reimburse someone for a political contribution. Any credible allegations of such actions merit investigation by the appropriate state and federal authorities,” Stein tweeted.
According to WRAL, “Reimbursing employees for political contributions is illegal under both federal and North Carolina law.”
