Attorney General Josh Stein filed a lawsuit against JH Home Improvements Inc., owner Jorge Alberto Garcia, and operator/manager Helen Smith Flores. The Chapel Hill-based business allegedly perpetrated a residential contracting scheme, according to ABC11.
The Stein lawsuit alleges that the defendants scammed elderly North Carolinians by taking their money and not completing the work.
Garcia allegedly took on jobs worth tens of thousands of dollars and then left them unfinished. He was not licensed to perform said work at the time, and even after being investigated and blocked from continuing the practice he acted again. This May, the FBI accused him and his wife of defrauding at least 50 elderly North Carolinians of $2 million, ABC11 reports.
Stein is alleging that Garcia manipulated elderly people once again, taking advantage of cognitive impairments like dementia, according to ABC11.
“When you hire someone to do work, you expect and deserve to have that work done well and at a reasonable cost,” Stein said. “My office will hold accountable anyone who tries to take advantage of North Carolinians–especially our most vulnerable. That’s why I’m going to court against these defendants.”
