Incumbent Governor Cooper continues to hold a comfortable lead over challenger Lt. Gov. Dan Forest in his bid for reelection. According to a recent poll from ECU Survey Research, Cooper leads Forest 49% to 38%.. 

According to the survey, Governor Cooper enjoys a 52% approval rating amongst registered voters. A similar 53% approve of his handling of the coronavirus outbreak.

Cooper continues to be amongst the most popular political figures in the state, outpacing President Trump’s approval rating which sits at 44% of registered voters. 

Finally, voters indicate support for Governor Cooper’s slower approach to reopening the state, with more than three-fifths concerned about the continued spread of the coronavirus and 93% say they often wear masks when outside their home. 

“Cooper continues to receive generally high marks from the public for his handling of the state’s response to the coronavirus and for the job that he has done as governor overall,” Director of the ECU Center for Survey Research Dr. Peter Francia said.
