Governor Roy Cooper outlined his priorities for the 2020-21 budget in his proposal at a press conference recently, EDNC reports. The proposal includes pay bonuses for educators, additional COVID-19 relief funding for schools and Medicaid expansion.
Cooper is calling for the allocation of $132 million of COVID-19 funding to purchase PPE and cleaning supplies for schools, meal transport, digital devices, increased access to the internet and more. Additional funding was slated for the community college system to adapt to COVID-19, EDNC reports.
Governor Cooper also called for a one-time $2000 bonus for teachers and principals.
“The budget I propose takes on the challenges of today while building for the promise of tomorrow,” Cooper said during the press conference. “We have to rise to the occasion of this pandemic response now.”
