Due to the continued success of the life sciences industry in North Carolina, BIO named Governor Cooper the BIO 2020 Governor of the Year. BIO is the world’s largest biotech trade association.
Governor Cooper accepted the honor and was grateful in his remarks, saying that all North Carolinians should take pride in the announcement.
“But a lot of North Carolinians should share that honor,” Cooper said. “Innovations in the life sciences are transforming the way we approach treating diseases, environmental sustainability, and food production.”
The award highlights recent strengths that North Carolina has built upon under Governor Cooper’s leadership. Among them, cell and gene therapy manufacturing, faster diagnostic testing and vaccine development, and academic bioscience research and development, NC Biotech reports.
North Carolina also gained thousands of jobs in life sciences last year. The agricultural feedstock and industrial bioscience industry generates more than $7 billion in economic activity for the state.
