The pinning ceremony for A-B Tech’s EMS program was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic, but the graduates were still honored in an unofficial ceremony, the Asheville Citizen-Times reports.

“We know that you’re going to shine and that you’re going to be an integral part of the COVID-19 response,” one woman said in a video posted by the Asheville-Citizen Times. The graduating class sat socially distanced and received pins with a skeleton audience.

Governor Cooper recognized the graduates in a tweet on May 11.

“Congratulations to the paramedics graduating from [A-B Tech] and all of our graduating future healthcare workers,” Cooper wrote. “We are so proud of your hard work and your service to our state as we fight this pandemic.”
