The White House is employing supercomputing in the effort to fight coronavirus.

Big Blue, a division of IBM, employs several thousands people in North Carolina, according to WRAL TechWire. One of the largest cloud centers for the supercomputer system is at the RTP campus.

IBM is joining with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy in concert with the U.S. Department of Energy in what is being called the COVID-19 High Performance Computing Consortium, TechWire reports.

Other firms in the Triangle are joining the effort as well. Lenovo has a headquarters in Morrisville and has teamed up with Intel and a Chinese genetics firm to help researchers learn more about the virus.

Dario Gil, director of IBM Research, says that the consortium is bringing together “an unprecedented amount of computing power” to help uncover the secrets of the coronavirus in an effort to find treatments and cures.

“In a time of uncertainty, I want to offer this promise: IBM will continue to explore everything in our power to use our technology and expertise to drive meaningful progress in this global fight,” Gil said.
