A report from Mississippi station WLBT shows their Republican governor facing scrutiny back home after appearing in North Carolina to campaign with Lt. Governor Dan Forest. Governor Tate Reeves, a Mississippi Republican, stumped for Forest in Salisbury, addressing a number of Republicans with few wearing masks, WLBT reports.
Reeves compared his presentation at the Rowan County event with people who attended protests against police brutality, calling it protected political speech. Both North Carolina and Mississippi have statewide mask mandates, though Reeves and Forest seemed to recklessly disregard them by holding in-person events without masks.
Lieutenant Governor Dan Forest has falsely claimed that “masks do not work with viruses,” and his campaign has pledged to “shake as many hands as we can” during the pandemic. Just a few weeks ago a Mt. Airy councilman criticized Forest for neglecting to wear a face covering while campaigning and putting people in harm’s way.
