According to WSOC, North Carolina ranks among the lowest in the South for COVID-19 percent positive rates. In recent days the state has hovered around a 5% positivity rate which NCDHHS Secretary Dr. Mandy Cohen says is a goal.

Additionally, the state is adding a new vendor for testing that will increase the number of free COVID-19 testing events in most North Carolina counties, WSOC reports.

Sec. Cohen says that a FEMA report shows North Carolina having the lowest percent positive COVID-19 rate in the region, WSOC reports. Cohen attributes that success to the mask mandate and social distancing.

“North Carolinians are wearing masks and practicing social distancing and it’s helping our state standout from the rest of the South,” Cohen said.

Despite the success North Carolina has seen with mask-wearing, Lt. Governor Dan Forest opposes masks and says he would remove the statewide mandate. He also goes further and falsely claims that masks do not work, even as the authors of the studies he cites refute the claim. Politifact found multiple false statements from Forest, on the effectiveness of masks and the danger of the virus to children. During the pandemic, Forest has held numerous indoor campaign events with no masks or social distancing.
