North Carolina House Republican Larry Pittman, of Cabarrus County, has stepped into controversy once again over remarks he made on his Facebook page about the recent protests seen in North Carolina and across the nation.
“These vermin don’t care about George Floyd or any other individual, except maybe their financial sponsor, George Soros,” Pittman wrote. “They are bent on destroying our country and our way of life, and they will use any tragedy, any slogan, any excuse to convince clueless people that their radical injustice is justice.”
Across the long, inflammatory post, Pittman referred to protestors in various terms, like “ignorant thugs,” “criminals,” “domestic terrorists” and “vermin.” If they resist and attack police, he said they should “shoot them,” the Charlotte Observer reports.
The Observer also included a number of former remarks that have raised eyebrows from the incumbent Republican, including when he compared Abraham Lincoln to Adolft Hitler, and calling for public hangings of doctors who perform abortions.
Pittman faces what will likely be the most competitive election for his seat this November in the form of Democratic challenger Gail Young.
