Current North Carolina Community College System president Peter Hans was unanimously elected to serve as president of the University of North Carolina System, WUNC reports.
The selection process took more than a year before the UNC Board of Governors elected Hans. After the departure of Margaret Spellings in October of 2018, Bill Roper served as interim president. His tenure ends in July.
Hans ran the 58-campus NC Community College System for two years and said he hopes that the UNC System will benefit from what he learned with the community colleges.
“The university can actually learn from the community colleges how to extend opportunity to all North Carolinians, how to stretch a dollar a little bit more effectively, how to focus on the students and their futures, and the taxpayers and their stake,” Hans said in his speech.
Governor Cooper and the top Republicans in the legislature issued a joint statement in support of Hans.
“Peter Hans has done tremendous work as president of the N.C. Community College System, and he’s the right choice for UNC System President,” they wrote.
