Though the prehistoric arrangement of stones in England known as Stonehenge are well-known around the world, North Carolina’s own variation is less known — at least for now!
Outside of Chapel Hill, a collection of stone monoliths circles a central boulder, each with various inscriptions, WRAL reports. Quotes from leaders such as Maya Angelou are inscribed on the stones.
John Hartley created Stone Knoll and a number of similar arrangements before passing away in 2011. His wife Lynne told WRAL that Hartley became influenced by African architecture while he served in the Peace Corps.
