New polling from North Carolina-based firm Public Policy Polling indicates the electorate broadly supports the way Governor Cooper is handling the coronavirus pandemic. This tracks with former polls showing widespread support of his leadership in the past few months.
60% of respondents say the virus has gotten worse in North Carolina the past few weeks. As cases have increased, Governor Cooper took action to extend current restrictions and to mandate masks while in public. The poll also indicates that nearly four-fifths believe it is important for people to wear masks.
The poll also shows voters agree with the governor’s decision to veto legislation pushed by Republicans that would open bars and gyms; just one-third of voters think they should reopen, with 55% opposed to loosening restrictions.
The polling points to a majority approval for Cooper’s leadership, with 52% approving, and has Cooper outpacing Republican Dan Forest by 9 points, 50-41.
