Bobby Williams, a South Carolina restaurateur and member of the state’s reopening task force, told WFAE reporter Nick de la Canal in an interview that North Carolina’s model of reopening seemed to be working and that he wishes South Carolina would have followed in implementing a statewide mask mandate.

“The face masks do work, so it hadn’t been a problem” to reopen restaurants, Williams says. Because South Carolina’s Republican Governor McMaster did not issue a statewide mask mandate, cities were forced to implement policies themselves.

“But it really helped when the city [mandated a mask],” Williams told WFAE. “So more and more people got on board. I wish we would have done it a little bit sooner. I think it would have been a little bit better place. North Carolina did it, and I went on vacation in North Carolina and everywhere I went, everyone wore a mask and I thought it was great.”

In North Carolina, Governor Cooper issued a statewide mask mandate in June. NCDHHS Secretary Mandy Cohen says the mask mandate has helped to slow the spread in North Carolina.
