This Latin Heritage Month, ABC11 profiled a pair of sisters who provide an indispensable service to the state: the Metivier sisters translate important pandemic updates from state leaders like Governor Cooper so that Spanish speakers in the state know about critical information.
The Metiviers were born in Mexico and their father encouraged them to learn English.
“For my dad, the most important thing was for his daughters to learn English, because he didn’t speak English even though his father was American. So that was his purpose in life,” Jackie told ABC11.
The sisters remained inseparable, ABC11 reports, and after college started Bilingual Communications in 1991.
“You have to work as a team. I think that’s the best way to do it,” Yasmin told ABC11. “And we’ve done it for so long that she knows what I know and I know what she knows and we just help each other out.”
