Governor Roy Cooper offered his support for the late Army Staff Sgt. Ronald J. Shurer II, who died battling lung cancer at 41. Shurer started his career in the military at Fort Bragg.
In 2018, Shurer received the highest honor bestowed upon members of the military: the Medal of Honor. He earned the medal for his treatment and evacuation of fellow soldiers while under fire in Afghanistan, WXII12 reports.
