Betsy Hutchison was recently honored at the Executive Mansion by Governor Roy Cooper. The 99 year old, who turns 100 on March 27th, served as a nurse during World War II.

While serving as a nurse during the war, Hutchison at one point treated patients in a burn center, according to WRAL. “They were away from home, they were young and, well, they were hurting,” WRAL reported.

Governor Cooper gave remarks and presented Betsy with a piece of china with the North Carolina state seal.

“I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for Betsy and the other veterans who were willing to put their lives on the line and defend our country,” Cooper told the gathered crowd.

The event ended with a group rendition of “Happy Birthday” for Betsy.
